'A comedy - four acts, rural scenery (a view over a lake), much talk of literature, little action, five bushels of love.'

Chekhov's modest description of his own play, first performed in 1896, says little about a work that changed forever the nature and possibilities of drama.  This translation by Michael Frayn (Noises Off, Copenhagen) brings a contemporary feel to the play with wit and charm, retaining the sensitive and profound observations on the human condition that Chekhov intended.
